Thank you Bruce Chatwin

The novel In Patagonia by Bruce Chatwin is a thesis on the magic of place and the art of mythmaking.

The story goes that in 1974, Mr. Chatwin quit his job by sending a telegram to his editor at The Sunday Times with a dramatic single sentence: Gone to Patagonia.

In the day-to-day slog, how many times had I dreamt of doing the very same?

Then one evening after a long day at the office, I threw out an idea to my Australian bestie on the other side of the world. “Should we meet halfway in Patagonia?” Her perfect response followed, “Yes! Now, where’s Patagonia exactly?”

Months later, Melissa and I had a grand reunion in Buenos Aires before setting off for the wild remoteness of Patagonia, stretching to the tip of South America and the very ends of the world.

We both love the magic of being in middle of nowhere. Against the backdrop of the Perito Moreno glacier and its ice blue lake, the two of us sat side-by-side, tired feet propped up on a rustic cabin porch railing. We talked about our dreams while enjoying a cold beer and a simple sandwich.

Years later, those glacial dreams have come to life. Melissa’s yoga barn, and now my artistic chapter.

The myth may be that it is easy, but sometimes it is just simple.
